Lake Darling
Lake Darling is a Souris River reservoir inside the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge, about half an hour northwest of Minot. Built in the 1930s for waterfowl and flood control and named for the conservationist cartoonist J.N. “Ding” Darling, it runs under federal refuge rules that make it unlike any other lake on this list.
Those rules are the feature, not the bug: with recreational cruising, skiing, and personal watercraft prohibited, Darling is purely a fishing lake — quiet water and serious anglers.
The Fishing
Darling is the Minot area’s serious walleye water, with strong northern pike and yellow perch alongside and smallmouth in the mix. The Souris River below the dam fishes well too. Because the refuge caps what the lake can be used for, fishing pressure stays civilized even in peak season.
