What buyers should actually know about credit checks.

Most of what people believe about credit pulls is wrong — and dealers benefit from that confusion. We don’t. Here’s the straight version. Print it, save it, bring it to any dealer (including us).

"Any credit check hurts my score."
A soft pull — used for pre-qualification — has zero impact on your FICO score. It does not appear to other lenders. A hard pull happens only when you formally apply for credit and typically drops your score by about 5 points, recovering within a few months of on-time payments.

"Dealers have high rates."
Not at Vallely Sport & Marine. We’re partnered with local banks, credit unions, and the most competitive national lenders — which saves you money and saves you time by finding a competitive rate and approval at the terms you want. A note in fairness: this isn’t the industry norm. Many small dealerships do have higher rates because they only work with one or two lenders. Our network is what makes the difference.

"Pre-qualified means I'm approved."
Pre-qualification is a soft-pull estimate of what you’re likely to qualify for. Pre-approval is a stronger signal — usually backed by a hard pull and underwriter review. Final approval only happens when the lender verifies income, identity, and the specific unit being financed.

"My credit score is the same number everywhere."
There are dozens of FICO models. The score on Credit Karma is VantageScore 3.0 — most lenders don’t use it. Marine and powersports lenders typically use FICO Auto Score variants, which weigh prior installment-loan performance more heavily. Your “real” score is the one the lender pulls, not the one in your app.

"Closing old credit cards helps my score."
Usually the opposite. Closing an old card reduces your total available credit (raising your utilization ratio) and shortens your average account age. Both hurt your score. Unless there’s an annual fee, leave old cards open and use them once a year to keep them active.

"Hard inquiries hurt my score for years."
A hard inquiry stays visible on your credit report for 24 months, but only affects your score for about 12 months — and the impact diminishes each month. By month 6, the effect is usually negligible. By month 12, it’s gone.

"Checking my own credit hurts my score."
No. Self-checks are soft pulls. You can — and should — check your own credit at least annually. AnnualCreditReport.com is the federally-mandated free source for reports from all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion).
The most important rule no one tells you

Multiple lender applications for the same loan, in the same window — count as one inquiry.

Modern FICO algorithms (FICO 04, 08, 09, and 10T) treat multiple hard inquiries for the same loan typewithin a 14–45 day window as a single inquiry. Older FICO versions use a 14-day window. This is why F&I managers shop multiple lenders simultaneously rather than sequentially — same score impact, much better rate discovery.
