Lake Ashtabula
Lake Ashtabula is the Sheyenne River backed up behind Baldhill Dam, about 12 miles northwest of Valley City. Long and narrow — some 5,200 acres stretched over 27 miles — it follows the old river valley north to south, and the drowned channel running its full length is why locals say it fishes more like a river than a lake.
The Army Corps built more than a dam here: four reservable campgrounds, seven boat ramps, and automated fish-cleaning stations make Ashtabula the most infrastructure-rich fishing destination in eastern North Dakota.
The Fishing
Walleye anchor the fishery along the old river channel, and Ashtabula’s white bass runs are a signature event — fast, shallow, and great fun on light tackle. Northern pike, yellow perch, crappie, and smallmouth round out the box.
